“Care of the soul goes beyond the secular mythology of the self and recovers a sense of the sacredness and endless depth of each human life.”

With compassion and insight, Thomas Moore offers a compelling case for an easier, lighter way of moving through life by experiencing the peace, calm, and openness of emptiness. Through ancient and modern stories, Thomas gently shows that our constant multitasking may not be getting us anywhere, and that emptiness is not a lack but an invitation that can be our greatest teacher. A daily awareness and appreciation of the quiet spaciousness in our world and our own lives is not a retreat from reality but a rich and full welcome to all that is most meaningful and real.

“This precious book is an extraordinary journey into silence and emptiness, one that touches all aspects of life and is revelatory.”

—Rev. Joan Jiko Halifax, abbot at Upaya Zen Center and author of Standing at the Edge

Among the pages of Henry David Thoreau’s journals and his legendary Walden, Thomas Moore, beloved bestselling author, psychotherapist, and public thinker, has found transformative ideas and approaches that promise to help us live better. As Moore writes, “We need to make the journey to our own ‘Walden Pond’ and find a cure for our cultural lostness.”

Like Moore’s own million-copy-bestselling Care of the SoulThe Cure at Walden Pond will be widely heralded among readers for its beautiful prose, accessible voice, and profound insights into the human condition.

Thoreau was disillusioned in his day by the same kind of frantic consumerism, round-the-clock work, and narrow imagination that trouble us today. Moore will help readers slow down, be more present and mindful in their relationships with their loved ones, and appreciate the beautiful world we share. For Moore, as for Thoreau, there is immense spiritual power all around us.

New Hampshire’s Mount Monadnock is a “natural temple” for all New Englanders, a place of reverence and renewal, and Moore encourages us to find our own places of rejuvenation. There is neglected spirituality—and humanity—in the everyday objects that sustain us too. Moore explores his own memories of an old farmhouse, a grinding stone, and an out-of-tune piano that bring him back to his childhood and his family history.

The journey to Walden Pond is an essential American pilgrimage, and The Cure at Walden Pond embodies Thoreau’s essence, guiding us through Thoreau’s precepts so we can find more harmony in our communities and in ourselves. Immersing ourselves in the music of the natural world The Cure at Walden Pond is a resonate read that will move and inspire any one in search of a new way of being.

For the past few years I have been writing a book I am calling The Cure at Walden Pond. It has a set of fifty passages from the writings of Henry David Thoreau plus a response from me. As I read extensively in Thoreau’s journals, letters, essays and books, I found many suprising and enlightening twists on conventional wisdom. I also found that Thoreau was more of a philosopher or even a depth psychologist than an environmentalist. Of course, he lived close to nature and studied it, and the gist of his approach is to learn from nature how to live. But his purpose in spending two years in a cabin he built next to Walden Pond was to find himself and design a way of life that would make his life worthy and worthwhile.

I thought it might be satisfying to me and interesting to my readers if I were to engage him and compare his innovative ideas with my own. One of my purposes was to make his thoughts more intelligible and approachable for contemporary readers. My book is not a literal dialogue with Thoreau, but it is a conversation between us. I felt that Thoreau, somewhat disturbed about his failure to be a poet and deeply in search of meaning sought a cure of sorts at Walden. Then I thought that if we could grasp his understanding of life, we might also find a cure for our uprootedness and neurotic cravings. Our world, too, is suffering from a state of lostness, not certain of where we are headed and how to avoid the superficial life of shallow entertainments and materialistic striving. My hope is that Thoreau’s ideas and example might show us how to rediscover our humanity and become people of strong conviction and able to form loving families and communities.

The book is now in production and should be ready for publication in the early summer of 2026. Check back to this page for information later about pre-order, endorsements and sample chapters.
